General Assembly (GA) is the annual meeting of our Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). Participants worship, witness, learn, connect, and make policy for the Association through democratic process. It will be June 22 – 26 and it will be both online and in-person in Portland, Oregon.
Anyone may attend! Delegates vote on our behalf, but everyone is encouraged to attend GA! Information about financial aid can be found here.
Our GA Delegate Policy, which was new and improved last year, charges the Nominating Committee with presenting the congregation with a slate of Delegates to vote on. This replaces the informal policy of figuring out who was already going to GA and asking some of those people to be delegates. The new policy is an improvement because our congregation is larger, so figuring out who is going to GA is a bit much to ask of the Board. Also, the new policy is more inclusive! This is because Westside is offering financial and logistical support to delegates, and because informal power structures reproduce existing power dynamics. We love and appreciate those who have historically been leaders at Westside and we want to keep making that table bigger! Another benefit of the new Delegate Policy is that delegates are asked to communicate with our congregation before GA – to let us know what is on the agenda, and to hear about what is important to us. They are also asked to report back to us after GA – to let us know what is happening with the UUA and other congregations, and to let us know the outcomes of the various business items they voted on. Thank you so much to the Westside leaders who drafted this excellent Policy!
Our congregation may send up to four voting delegates. Ideally, our delegates will be a mix of new and returning Delegates, serving overlapping two-year terms.
This year, Kerrie Schurr and Paula vanHaagen will be on our slate as returning delegates – thank you Kerrie and Paula! Leilani Davenberry served in 2020 and 2021 and was a power delegate – thank you Leilani, for being a leader at Westside and for participating in such a robust way as a delegate!
We will vote for a slate of Delegates using an online form that will be open 2/13/22 to 2/20/22 – just in time for Valentine’s Day because we LOVE our Delegates!
