In just over a week, we Westsiders will be gathering for our annual Ingathering service and social hour. As this marks the start of my second full year as minister in this community, this is a special occasion that I am really looking forward to. Whether or not we took time away for the summer, we will get to greet one another anew. Those of us in leadership roles and on volunteer teams will get to check in with one another after some well-deserved rest. And, there will inevitably be new faces to welcome in: folks who met us at Pride or the West Seattle Summer Fest, a new Director of Religious Exploration (more updates coming soon), and others who are coming to us seeking a new faith community.
Whether you have been with us for decades, or are just checking us out for the first time, I want to invite you to think about what you hope to find in this community, what you are eager to offer. There is a sense that after years of pandemic lockdowns and staff transitions and grappling with our congregational identity, that we are growing in capacity. Capacity for dynamic programming, innovative worship, intentional governance, and more. We are part of the emergent church, and have an opportunity to create a fresh start together.
Please, take time to explore our Activities Fair during social hour after our service on September 8. In addition to a chance to have your questions answered by various committees and small group ministry leaders, you can also join in an experiential RE activity, and make signs with the Environmental Justice Group about an important upcoming initiative. There is a lot being queued up for the coming months: becoming a hub for Meaningful Movies, adult education offerings, finalizing our new Covenant of Right Relations, learning opportunities for deepening in our practice of nonviolent communication, collective organizing to get out the vote, and so much more. Where do you want to plug in?
Lastly, I want to remind everyone that I am available to connect. It can feel limiting to be a part-time minister who works in person just two weeks out of the month, but I love this community and am committed to being here as you need me. While I try my best to reach out to get to know folks on an individual basis, the best way to get to know me and receive support is to ask! I have time set aside for 1:1 meetings to talk about congregational life, personal issues, big spiritual questions, and more. You can get on my calendar by going to https://calendly.com/revcarter or by emailing me directly at minister@wsuu.org.
