Praise for Hard Beginnings – John Britt

In childhood we embark upon many significant beginnings- learning to walk and talk and much more. When I was learning to ride a bike I received praise, encouragement and practical support. I received useful advice about balance, momentum and steering, observed modeling of good technique, received applause for small victories, genuine sympathy when I (inevitably) fell over, and a kiss and a band aid when I got a “boo boo”. Learning to be in community at Westside requires a different set of skills than riding a bike, but each of us in our own way ARE still beginners. Building community is not for the faint of heart and requires practice, courage and the willingness to be vulnerable. Whether beginning to trust, to take initiative, to forgive, to ask for help or give it, or to share a deeper part of our story, let’s explore how we can give and receive the support we need.
